Marco A. Hernandez 

The Fall 2023 semester was my second and last semester as a reporter for The Rampage, Fresno City College's student-run news organization. As a returning reporter, I wanted to be involved with the organization by becoming its business manager. 

 

Coming into this role, there was no set path to follow as this position was not productive in previous semesters. This is where I learned the values of collaboration and finding the best path forward with my fellow-editors and I.

 

During this path, I communicated with various businesses around Fresno City College. It was nerve-racking, to say the least, but it was an experience about my presentational skills. I was in charge of selling The Rampage to these businesses and why they can benefit from advertising with us. 

 

For example, I gathered analytics from our website, which showed how many site visits we commonly receive, and used that as a selling point for our organization.

 

Despite not earning any advertisements this semester, I learned valuable experience as the business manager that can be implemented in all parts of my career.

 

Besides being the business manager, I did report for The Rampage this semester. Everything I knew from my last semester as a reporter, I implemented it towards my coverage for this semester which made it an easier time to create.

 

I not only wrote stories, conducted interviews, and practiced my photography skills, but I learned to view stories at angles I would have not thought before. Though, my ethics remained the same from last semester.

 

Ethics such as providing receipts for my work and comprehending information from interviews. I have matured and held integrity towards my sources to truthfully present a story.

 

Overall, I ended my time with The Rampage on a strong note. That becoming a journalist and business manager is more than a challenge. It is a responsibility. A responsibility that voices are heard, information is relayed, communication is precise, and people are represented rightfully.
